IBM has reportedly laid off as many as 1,200 employees in North America this week, according to several media outlets and the leader of a union organizing group.
Citing internal IBM documents logging staffing cuts, Lee Conrad, national coordinator at Alliance@IBM, leaked the news to the group's website Monday, reporting employees have been laid off in areas of the United States and Canada.

In a phone interview with the Patriot-News Tuesday, Conrad said the cuts have not appeared to affect IBM operations in the midstate, where the company holds offices in Hampden Twp. and Harrisburg.

The group expects more cuts, Conrad said.
Alliance@IBM has not been accepted as a union at IBM but is registered with the Communication Workers of America.
Since the leak, the story has reported by several news organizations, including The Washington Post, Business Insider and Times of India, some of which reported less than 1,000 cuts. 

Several attempts failed Tuesday to reach IBM.
The Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry, which tracks unemployment, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Based in Armonk, N.Y., IBM is the world’s largest computer-services provider and employed more than 400,000 workers world-wide in 2011, Conrad said.
