Apple wants to make discovering applications in its iOS App Store a less overwhelming experience. With over half a million apps currently stacking the shelves in the Cupertino-based company’s enormous ecosystem, it can be pretty darn difficult to find new apps worth downloading. That’s why Apple’s purchase of app search and discovery platform Chomp is so interesting.
Using a proprietary algorithm, Chomp lets users search through a sea of applications based on functions, not just names. For example, an iPhone user can search for “puzzle games,” “kids games” and “expense trackers” to help them find new apps.
According to TechCrunch, Apple plans to use Chomp’s technology to completely revamp App Store search and recommendations, news that lines up nicely with mumblings we heard previously about an impending overhaul.
Users have thus far managed to navigate the massive App Store maze, with nearly 25 billion apps downloaded. Imagine where that number will be once Chomp works its magic and Apple hits the revamp button.
