然傳統硬碟在速度與厚度上很難與 SSD 競爭,但這個老朋友仍然是提供價位、容量與速度三者兼具最好的選擇。在這次日本 CEATEC 展場上,TDK 展出僅改變磁頭與磁碟材質就可以大幅增加磁錄密度達每平方英吋 1.5 TB 的技術,這表示 2.5" 筆電硬碟的單碟容量將可達 1 TB;3.5" 桌上型硬碟更可達 2 TB 的單碟容量。TDK 表示這項技術預計將在 2014 年可投入量產。

TDK Corp announced the results of its research for enhancing HDD recording density.

TDK realized an areal density of 1.5 Tbits/(inch)2 with a magnetic head technology that is based on a thermal assist recording method and uses near-field light. The bit error rate (BER) is 10-2.

In the past, TDK realized a BER of 10-2 with an areal density of 1 Tbit/(inch)2. This time, the company achieved the higher areal density, which it claims is the industry's highest. It plans to use the new technology for volume production within 2014.

The areal density of 1.5 Tbits/(inch)2 is twice as high as the areal density of TDK's existing products, the company said. It is equivalent to 1 Tbyte per platter for 2.5-inch HDDs and 2 Tbytes per platter for 3.5-inch HDDs.

As for measurement environment, TDK evaluated the new technology by using a spin stand as in the case of the evaluation of the 1 Tbit/(inch)2 technology.

"What we have changed are only the magnetic head and hard disk medium," it said.

As a result, TDK confirmed a BER of 10-2 with a linear density of 1,350kBPI and a track density of 1,113kTPI. In the evaluation of the 1 Tbit/(inch)2 technology, the linear density and track density were 1,100kBPI and 915kTPI, respectively.

Though TDK did not disclose details, it said that the latest results were achieved by making improvements to magnetic head and hard disk medium. As for the medium, the company received help from Showa Denko K.K.

TDK plans to announce the latest results at CEATEC JAPAN 2012. At the show, the company will also demonstrate a thermal assist recording method based on near-field light by using an actual HDD supporting the method with help from an HDD manufacturer. TDK has not disclosed the name of the HHD manufacturer or the details of the HDD such as its capacity.
