Analog Devices (ADI) has acquired OneTree Microdevices, a fabless startup developing GaAs and GaN amplifiers for cable (CATV) and fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) infrastructure. ADI currently supplies data converters, clocking and control/power conditioning for cable access applications. The addition of OneTree Microdevices enables ADI to supply the complete signal chain for cable infrastructure.

The demand for higher data rates for content delivery to the home, supported by the implementation of the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) 3.1 standard, requires broader bandwidth, higher output power and better linearity from the amplifiers in the CATV distribution network. OneTree Microdevices, based in Santa Rosa, California, designs amplifiers for this next generation, using combinations of GaAs and GaN devices.

Greg Henderson, vice president of the RF and microwave business at ADI, said, “OneTree’s expertise aligns with ADI’s strategic focus on GaN technology and extends ADI’s broad portfolio of high performance, RF and microwave signal chain solutions for infrastructure, defense and instrumentation markets.”

Chris Day, co-founder of OneTree Microdevices, said, “Both ADI and OneTree are directly engaged with customers, cable operators and industry standards groups to drive cable standards discussions. Together, we will be able to effectively assist cable operators in their quest to provide compelling cost and data rates to home and business users.”

ADI did not disclose the purchase price or other terms of the acquisition. OneTree Microdevices was co-founded by Chris Day and Jim Keggereis in 2014. In 2003, Day launched a similar CATV-focused venture, TriAccess Technologies, that was acquired by TriQuint Semiconductor in 2009.
